The Tragic Passing of a Television Legend

Matthew Perry’s death sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry. Law enforcement officials responded to a cardiac arrest emergency at his Los Angeles residence, where they discovered the actor lifeless in the jacuzzi. While the exact cause of his passing remains undisclosed, Perry was candid about his battles with substance abuse and addiction.

A Lifelong Struggle

Perry’s battle with addiction commenced at the age of 18 when he began regular alcohol consumption. His reliance on Vicodin began around 1996 after a jet ski accident. Shockingly, at one point in time, he confessed to consuming a staggering 55 Vicodin pills daily. This severe addiction led Perry to attend an astounding 6,000 AA meetings, undergo 15 stints in rehab, endure 65 detoxifications, experience life support, and expend between $7 million and $9 million in his quest for sobriety.

“I had a big problem with alcohol and pills, and I couldn’t stop,” Perry candidly admitted to People in 2013. “Eventually, things got so bad that I couldn’t hide it, and then everybody knew.”

In 2018, Perry was struck by pneumonia and suffered from a ruptured colon, resulting in a life-threatening situation. He endured two weeks in a coma, was dependent on a colostomy bag for nine months, and underwent over a dozen stomach surgeries. Throughout this harrowing journey, his Friends co-stars stood by him, with Lisa Kudrow, who portrayed Phoebe Buffay, even writing the foreword to his memoir.

Unwavering Support

Kudrow emphasized the challenges Perry faced, describing addiction as a “hideous disease.” She affirmed Perry’s indomitable spirit, expressing her deep affection for him and her commitment to supporting him throughout his recovery.

Perry’s fellow Friends co-star, Jennifer Aniston, played a pivotal role in encouraging his sobriety. In an interview with Diane Sawyer, Perry recounted how Aniston fearlessly confronted his drinking habits. She was the one who took the courageous step of addressing his struggle, marking a significant turning point in his life.

In a poignant note, Perry recalled Aniston’s impactful words: “We know you’re drinking.” He went on to reflect on the significance of that moment, stating, “Imagine how scary a moment that was.” Perry expressed his profound gratitude towards Aniston for her unwavering support during his challenging journey to recovery.
